November 24/25

Today in class we:

Turned in Unit 5/6 Packet *make sure learning targets are filled out, vocab sheet (purple pages) are complete and journals are turned in!

We had a short review and then took the test

We got our new packets for Unit 7- Homework is to fill out the green sheet in your new packet 'Immigration Project' background research

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving! Be safe, eat lots of food, enjoy time with your family and friends :)

November 20/21

Today in class we:
Finished our packets (Chapter 6: Section 3)

We watched some video clips on the Men Who Built America **use the 'The Men Who Built America' clip search worksheet if you were absent, or if you didn't finish up in class, this is homework.

Journal: Practice writing a 5 paragraph essay- Pick a group that helped settle the West. Write 5 paragraphs explaining how they were the most influential group to settle the West. You may use your 'people of the West' chart in your yellow packet to help you. REMEMBER your exam will be an essay. The theme will be Robber Barons, so look over the Men Who Built America worksheet to help you study.

Homework: Finish up the vocabulary terms (purple paper) and make sure everything on the list below is complete! That includes your learning target guides in your packet. Look over the purple sheet to review for the quiz and be prepared for your essay *there is a hint about the topic right above under the journal.

November 18/19

Today in class we

Started chapter 6 in your note packet learning about the New Industrial age. We finished sections 1, 2, and through #7 on section 3 (Use slides 1-29 on Unit 6 PowerPoint)

We also continued learning about essay writing:
Journal 
We put all of the steps together; brainstorming, writing a thesis statement, and how to write the body paragraphs (I have put a PowerPoint on essay writing under the Unit 7 tab) For your journal, you will write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic of your choice. **Use the PowerPoint to help guide you, answer questions, and if you can't think of a topic I have put some sample questions on the last slide, or you may may choose
1. Was the Civil War worth its costs?
2. Was the Civil War a war for freedom?

Homework
Do #22-31 of your purple vocab sheet words! 
*if there is a term that we didn't mention in class- don't worry about it, just cross it out :)

November 14/17

Today in class we:

Finished filling out sections 2 & 3 in your yellow note packet (this means we finished up Unit 5). We finished the 'People of the West' posters and then presented them to the class and filled out the people of the West worksheet. If you were absent, you will need to research each person of the West and fill out the worksheet listing 5 facts for each person.

Journal: We also continued learning about essay writing, focusing on THESIS STATEMENTS. Thesis statements define the scope and purpose of the paper and need to meet the following 3 criteria:
1. It must be arguable-  not a statement or a fact
2. It must be limited enough so that the paper develops in some depth
3. It must be unified so the paper does not stray from the topic.

For your Journal Entry #2 you will write a thesis statement for each topic-
- Are Political parties good for our nation?
- Why did the colonists declare independence from Great Britain?
- Why were the colonists able to win the Revolutionary War?

Homework: Fill out #11-21 on the vocab sheet in your packet (purple paper)

November 12/13

For this unit we will not a TEST- we will have a short quiz and an essay. Each day in class we will be learning/discussing how to write a good 5 paragraph essay; today we focused on Brainstorming.

Journal: Choose one of the following questions and brainstorm what you would put in an essay about the given topic (you choose whichever brainstorming method you like ie. diagram, list etc)


  1. Which group that settled/colonized America had the greatest impact on our culture today?
  2. Why were the colonists able to win the Revolutionary War?
  3. How do the ideals of Manifest Destiny still shape American’s views?
  4. What are the differences between the North and South?
We also took guided notes on section 1 of your new Packet (Unit 5/6) and started people of the West posters *If you were absent come see me and I will let you know how to make this up*

November 6/7

Today in class we:

Finished up lecture notes (section 4)

Watched video clip on what life would have been life IF the South would have won the Civil War and did a journal write (answer the question: What would have happened if the South had won- Politically, Socially, and Economically) *This should be Journal entry #5

We also started the vocab term/event page (last sheet in the purple packet) whatever you did not finish in class, is now homework!

NEXT CLASS PERIOD YOUR PACKET AND FACEBOOK PAGE ARE DUE! IT IS ALSO THE TEST! We will have a short review before the test in class, however I suggest you study the study guide handed out in class!
