Today in class we turned in Unit 7 Packet!

Made Unit 8,9,10 Packet, introduced the Project ("the Important book") and did an activity center while filling out Progressivism notes.  If you were not in class you will need to do an alternate assignment; come talk to me and I will give you your options :)

We also worked on 3 different projects or stations- whatever you didn't finish in class will be homework!
1.UpFRONT article + worksheet
    -these are the Gold and Yellow pages in your packet!
2. Political Cartoons
    -You will look at 2 political cartoons and answer the questions associated with them. You can find these under the Unit 7 Tab, click on the link, open the stations folder, and download the political cartoon document. You can also find them here:

3. Timeline
    -Choose 5 events (with years) from Unit 5, 6,7 (use last packet and this packet to help you) so 15 events total. Put these on a timeline, chronologically. 5 of these events must have a picture associated with them.

Today in class we:

Today in class we filled out section 2 of our notes, watched section 3 of cities, and did the mugshot assignment (white paper)

we also worked on the google maps assignment (pink page of your packet) when you are finished you can either- screen shot and print it out,  or share it with me kayliw@provo.edu

Today in class we:

STARTED OUR IMMIGRATION UNIT :)

Journal Prompt: What do you know about immigration in the 1880s vs. now? (write a paragraph)

We finished section 1 of your notes in the packet (blue paper) and watched section 1 & 2 of Cities (purple paper)

Homework: Have the green and pink ancestor sheets filled out before next class period, you will need it to complete an assignment in class.  I suggest that you begin working on your posters as well- This is due December 9th for 3rd period and December 10th for 2nd and 6th periods- Remember our deal.... if everyone completes the project; NO test!!!

Today in class we:

Turned in Unit 5/6 Packet *make sure learning targets are filled out, vocab sheet (purple pages) are complete and journals are turned in!

We had a short review and then took the test

We got our new packets for Unit 7- Homework is to fill out the green sheet in your new packet 'Immigration Project' background research

November 20/21

Today in class we:
Finished our packets (Chapter 6: Section 3)

We watched some video clips on the Men Who Built America **use the 'The Men Who Built America' clip search worksheet if you were absent, or if you didn't finish up in class, this is homework.

Journal: Practice writing a 5 paragraph essay- Pick a group that helped settle the West. Write 5 paragraphs explaining how they were the most influential group to settle the West. You may use your 'people of the West' chart in your yellow packet to help you. REMEMBER your exam will be an essay. The theme will be Robber Barons, so look over the Men Who Built America worksheet to help you study.

Homework: Finish up the vocabulary terms (purple paper) and make sure everything on the list below is complete! That includes your learning target guides in your packet. Look over the purple sheet to review for the quiz and be prepared for your essay *there is a hint about the topic right above under the journal.

November 18/19

Today in class we

Started chapter 6 in your note packet learning about the New Industrial age. We finished sections 1, 2, and through #7 on section 3 (Use slides 1-29 on Unit 6 PowerPoint)

We also continued learning about essay writing:
Journal 
We put all of the steps together; brainstorming, writing a thesis statement, and how to write the body paragraphs (I have put a PowerPoint on essay writing under the Unit 7 tab) For your journal, you will write a 5 paragraph essay on the topic of your choice. **Use the PowerPoint to help guide you, answer questions, and if you can't think of a topic I have put some sample questions on the last slide, or you may may choose
1. Was the Civil War worth its costs?
2. Was the Civil War a war for freedom?

Do #22-31 of your purple vocab sheet words! 
*if there is a term that we didn't mention in class- don't worry about it, just cross it out :)

November 14/17

Today in class we:

Finished filling out sections 2 & 3 in your yellow note packet (this means we finished up Unit 5). We finished the 'People of the West' posters and then presented them to the class and filled out the people of the West worksheet. If you were absent, you will need to research each person of the West and fill out the worksheet listing 5 facts for each person.

Journal: We also continued learning about essay writing, focusing on THESIS STATEMENTS. Thesis statements define the scope and purpose of the paper and need to meet the following 3 criteria:
1. It must be arguable-  not a statement or a fact
2. It must be limited enough so that the paper develops in some depth
3. It must be unified so the paper does not stray from the topic.

For your Journal Entry #2 you will write a thesis statement for each topic-
- Are Political parties good for our nation?
- Why did the colonists declare independence from Great Britain?
- Why were the colonists able to win the Revolutionary War?

Homework: Fill out #11-21 on the vocab sheet in your packet (purple paper)

For this unit we will not a TEST- we will have a short quiz and an essay. Each day in class we will be learning/discussing how to write a good 5 paragraph essay; today we focused on Brainstorming.

Journal: Choose one of the following questions and brainstorm what you would put in an essay about the given topic (you choose whichever brainstorming method you like ie. diagram, list etc)


  1. Which group that settled/colonized America had the greatest impact on our culture today?
  2. Why were the colonists able to win the Revolutionary War?
  3. How do the ideals of Manifest Destiny still shape American’s views?
  4. What are the differences between the North and South?
We also took guided notes on section 1 of your new Packet (Unit 5/6) and started people of the West posters *If you were absent come see me and I will let you know how to make this up*

Today in class we:

Finished up lecture notes (section 4)

Watched video clip on what life would have been life IF the South would have won the Civil War and did a journal write (answer the question: What would have happened if the South had won- Politically, Socially, and Economically) *This should be Journal entry #5

We also started the vocab term/event page (last sheet in the purple packet) whatever you did not finish in class, is now homework!

NEXT CLASS PERIOD YOUR PACKET AND FACEBOOK PAGE ARE DUE! IT IS ALSO THE TEST! We will have a short review before the test in class, however I suggest you study the study guide handed out in class!

October 29/30

Today in class we started section 3 of your guided notes (#30-#34); we also had a discussion on the Gettysburg Address *make sure that your peach page in your packet is complete!

We did a live amputation of a Civil War soldier in class. If you were absent, you will need to come and get the amputation article.

We also did the green page in your packet (Civil War Photography) use the Civil War Photography PowerPoint to complete the worksheet.

Make sure that the peach page in your packet (Gettysburg Address) is complete for next class period!

Today in class we:

Finished up sections 2 & 3 of your guided note packet. We started to work on the Gettysburg Address analysis page in your packet (the peach paper) whatever you did not finish in class is homework, as well will be discussing it next week in class!

All of your grades are up to date in PowerSchool so this is your final grade in the class, if you have any questions, comments, or concerns feel free to come and talk to me :)

Resubmitted Unit 3 Packet- the scores got messed up, so please turn them in again so I can get them in PowerSchool :)

We filled out sections 4 & 5 of the Story of Us: Division note guide

AND we did our Underground RailRoad simulation- if you were absent you will need to come and see me so I can tell you how to make that up!

Today in class we:


  • Our project for this Unit will be to create a Facebook profile for a significant figure during the Civil War; instructions & blank template are found under the Unit 4 tab. I gave the option of creating an actual Facebook profile following the same guidelines and emailing me the link for some extra credit (email the link to: kayliw@provo.edu) 
  • Got Unit 4 Packets, and did section 1 of the of the packet (through question 10)
  • We watched 2 video clips form the Story of Us and filled out the movie notes
  • Started the North v. South sorting activity- whatever you did not finish in class is homework!


I have updated all grades- what PowerSchool says, will be your final grade for Term 1. If you are failing my class and have used all of your late passes, remember that I will accept unlimited amounts of late work, however the highest grade you will receive is a C- (passing)

I hope that you have a fantastic FALL BREAK!!!!!

September 30/October 1

Today in class we graded our tests, watched our class movies, got our packets for Unit 3, talked about the Unit 3 Project and watched section 1 of the Story of Us: Westward.

All assignments can be found under the Unit 3 tab.

For your project you will need to use magazines and newspapers to find 5 pictures, words, ads to represent each topic and make a collage. We will have some time in class on October 8/9 to work on these, so make sure that you are prepared. They will be due October 10/13 whichever day you have class!

If you are unhappy with your Unit 2 test score, remember that you have the option of doing test corrections, which will be due October 10/13 :)

Today in class we:

Finished up our packets! (use PowerPoint 4)

We also talked about the most recent election in the US Obama running against Romney; we examined each candidate and their stands on current issues. Use the Election Worksheet and PowerPoint under Unit 2 tab.

The test is next time so make sure that you study! Use the study guide.... I PROMISE if you study this, you will ace the test :)

Today in Class we:

  • Finished up PowerPoint 2 and section 2 in the notes packet
  • I handed out late passes (2 per semester) if you weren't here come see me and I will give you them! 
  • Handed out the Unit 2 Test Review (also posted under Unit 2) 
  • We used PowerPoint 3 and finished filling in Section 3 of the note guide. 
  • We finished up the John Adams movie about the Boston Massacre. 


HOMEWORK: Make sure that you have finished the 'timeline' in the packet, as well as the review questions after section 2 and 3 in your packets! Start studying for your test! The test will be this Friday and next Monday :)

Today was the big day.... WE FILMED OUR CLASS MOVIE/S!
I pulled each group out individually to work on their scenes; while I pulled each group out, everyone else worked on the 'road to constitution cartoon' which I've posted under the Unit 2 tab.
(this will be due along with your packets the day of the test!)

After filming, we talked about Valley Forge and Life during the Revolution (in your packet use PowerPoint 2)

Test Corrections

Under the 'Class Documents' tab I provided a link with instructions as well as an example of what I expect for test corrections :) Remember you will earn 1/2 points back for each answer and they will be DUE THE DAY OF THE NEXT UNIT'S TEST! 

September 16/17

Today in class we started our Daily Journal's again

Daily Question: What is worth going to war over? 

We then had our Loyalist Patriot Debate and then turned them in

We started Section 2 of Note Packet - With PowerPoint 2 (section 2 starts with 'The War Beings!' and goes through 'The War becomes a symbol of Liberty') The homework is answer the review questions (1-3). 

We also watch 3 video clips and took guided notes on:  Battle of Saratoga,  Valley Forge, and Yorktown- I have posted the note guides under Unit 2 tab and the videos here. 







We used the last part of class to break out into our movie groups because WE ARE FILMING NEXT CLASS PERIOD YAY!
